[맘스커리어=김현주 미주특파원] 2023년 9월 9일 미국 콜로라도 주 거너슨 도서관에서 슈퍼 토요일 스토리타임 행사가 열렸다. ‘T-REX, T-PARTY‘ 라는 주제로 다양한 프로그램과 체험활동이 펼쳐졌다.
Q. 오늘 스토리텔링 어땠나요?
브리아나 템플: 오늘 프로그램은 이야기, 노래, 움직임을 혼합했습니다. 여러 권의 공룡 책을 읽으며 공룡 노래와 율동을 함께 한 ‘티렉스, 티 파티’라는 주제였습니다. 저는 여러 곡의 노래를 불렀고 아이들이 춤추고 놀 수 있도록 스카프를 만들어 제공했습니다. 이를 통해 아이들이 일어나서 움직일 수 있는 기회를 제공했고 이야기 시간의 일부가 되었습니다. 그 후, 우리는 아이들과 부모님들이 즐길 수 있는 다과 시간과 공예 시간을 가졌습니다. 우리는 부모님들로부터 긍정적인 피드백을 받았습니다. 전반적으로, 저는 그것이 성공적이라고 생각하고 거너슨 도서관에서는 아이들과 부모들이 함께하는 행사들이 다채롭게 매주 제공되기 때문에 이러한 행사들을 기획하고 제작하는 일들이 매우 기쁩니다.
Q. 부모님과 자녀들에게 추천하고 싶은 책은 무엇입니까?
브리아나 템플: 우선 부모님들이 독서를 좋아하는 자녀들로 키우기 위해 책을 고르실 때 두 가지 팁을 드리겠습니다. 첫째, 노래 타입의 리듬이 있는 책을 골라주세요. 둘째, 어린이들에게 흥미를 유발할 재미있고 매력적인 사진들이 많이 실려 있는 책을 골라주세요. 이렇게 고르신 책으로 매일 부모님들과 아이들이 스토리타임을 갖는다면 아이들은 금세 스마트폰 보는 것보다 책 읽는 것을 더 좋아하게 될 것입니다.
제가 유년 시절 부터 가장 좋아하는 페니 데일의 "Ten in the Bed"를 추천합니다. 다양한 리듬이 있는 책이기 때문입니다. 한국에서는 2017년 뽀로로가 노래로 불렀다 하더라고요. 또한 아이들이 이야기에 집중할 수 있도록 상호작용을 해주는 톰 플레처의 "There's a Dragon in your Book"을 추천합니다.
Q. 오늘 '슈퍼 토요일, 스토리타임' 도서관 행사의 목적은 무엇입니까?
킬린 매카시: 아이들이 독서에 참여하고 여러 부모님들이 함께 모여 공동체를 형성할 수 있도록 토요일 오전에 스토리타임을 주최해 보았습니다.
Q. 매주 다양한 주제로 많은 행사들이 도서관에서 이루어지는 이유는 무엇입니까?
킬린 매카시: 도서관에서 열리는 여러 행사들은 공동체를 만드는 것을 목표로 합니다. 누구나 새로운 것을 탐험하고 참여하고 배울 수 있도록 무료로 개방되어 있습니다. 거너슨 도서관에서 가장 좋아하는 행사는 사람들이 새로운 기술이나 새로운 정보를 배울 수 있고, 또한 그들의 공동체와 친해지고 이웃들과 관계를 형성할 수 있는 행사입니다.
Q. 책을 많이 읽는 아이로 키우고 싶은 부모님들께 노하우를 알려준다면 어떤 방법들이 있을까요?
킬린 매카시: 콜로라도 주 모든 도서관에서 교육하고 있는 독서 준비 강화를 위한 5가지 방법이 있는데요. 한국 부모님들께 꼭 알려드리고 싶습니다.
△함께 책을 읽고 아이들 또한 부모에게 책을 읽어주도록 하세요. 비록 시늉만 하는 것일지라도 아이들은 독서가 친숙하고 재미있게 느껴질 것입니다.
△함께 그림도 그리고 낙서도 하고 필기구와 종이로 할 수 있는 모든 것들을 찾아 해주세요. 아이들이 이야기하는 기술을 기를 수 있게 도와줍니다.
△함께 대화 시간을 많이 가져주세요. 어른들과의 대화 연습과 맥락을 통해 어휘와 구문을 만들어 나갑니다.
△함께 노래해 주세요. 노래는 아이들이 나중에 읽고 쓰는 능력을 기를 수 있도록 리듬과 라임을 식별하는 데 도움을 줍니다.
△함께 놀아주세요. 놀이는 아이들이 이야기를 탐구하고 스토리텔링을 연습할 수 있게 해줍니다. 그것은 창의력, 추상적 사고, 그리고 강력한 상상력을 만들어줍니다
Q. 도서관에서 행사 중에 가장 호응이 좋았던 행사는 무엇입니까?
멜리사 타다: 지난달 개최되었던 ‘ FAMILY BUBBLES BONANZA - 가족과 함께하는거품 물놀이’ 행사입니다. 더운 날씨에 준비하느라 힘들었지만 행사장에서 아이들과 부모님들의 행복한 미소들을 보며 큰 보람을 느꼈습니다.
Q.한국 부모님들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있다면 무엇입니까?
멜리사 타다: 저는 하와이 출신이라 한국 가족들을 많이 보았습니다. 미국 가족들과는 다르게 부모님들은 일하느라 바쁘고 자녀들은 각자 개인 공부 레슨에 바쁘게 지내더라고요. 행복한 가정의 시작과 끝은 가족 구성원이 얼마나 함께 시간을 보내느냐인 것 같습니다. 부모님들이 자녀들과 매일 함께 책도 읽고 요리도 하고 산책도 하며 대화를 많이 하신다면 자녀들도 부모님들의 바람대로 바르게 성장할 것입니다. 부디 가족과 많은 시간을 보내시기 바랍니다.

T-REX! T-PARTY! SUPER SATURDAY STORYTIME
On September 9, 2023, a Super Saturday Storytime event was held at the Gunnison Library in Colorado, United States. Various programs and hands-on activities were held under the theme of "T-REX, T-PARTY."
Q. How was today's storytelling?
Brianna Temple: Today's storytelling was great! We had a good turn out and the kids were engaged. We did a mix of stories, songs, and movement. This one was themed as a T-Rex Tea party, with all dinosaur books and some dinosaur songs. I did sing other songs and had scarves out for kids to dance and play with that didn't involve dinosaurs. This provided the opportunity for kids to get up and move as well as be a part of the story time.。Afterwards, we had a snack and craft available for kids and their parents to enjoy. We were given positive feedback from parents. Overall, I believe it to be a success and we are excited to continue offering this service.
Q.What book do you want to recommend to parents or children?
Brianna Temple: I love all sorts of Children's books, its hard to choose just one. I always look for books with a sing-song type of rhythm, especially for younger kids. l also look for fun, engaging pictures to grab their attention. My all time favorite book growing up was "Ten in the Bed" by Penny Dale, because it was a song that went through different sounds. I also love interactive books with kids because it gets them to focus on the story and be in the moment. My favorite interactive book is "There's a Dragon in your Book" by Tom Fletcher.
Q.What is the purpose of today's library event?
Keelin MacCarthy: We wanted to offer a Story Time at a time when working parents/families and kids in school could attend, so we chose a Saturday morning. Our goal is to have a fun free monthly event for families where kids can engage with reading and adult care givers can get together and form a Community.
Q.What is the goal, in general, of the events offered at the library?
Keelin MacCarthy: Youth Services events at the library aim to build a community.
Our events are free and open to all so that anyone can explore, engage, and learn new a things. Our favorite events are ones in which folks can learn a new skill or new information, while also socializing with their community and creating connections to their neighbors.
Q. Give tip to parents who want to raise a child who reads a lot
Keelin MacCarthy: The Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy provide 5 practices to strengthen readiness to read:
△ Read : Read with children and let them read to you (even if they are just pretending)! Exposure to books makes them familiar and fun.
△ Write : This includes drawing, scribbling, anything with a writing instrument and paper. This lets them build skills to tell stories.
△ Talk : Talking to adults builds vocabulary and syntax through practice and context.
△ Sing : Singing helps kids identify rhythm and rhyme, which will build their ability to read and write later on.
△Play: Play allows kids to explore stories and practice storytelling. It encourages creativity, abstract thinking, and a powerful imagination
Q.What was the most popular event in the library?
Melissa Tada: It was last month's "FAMILY BUBBLES BONANZA".
We all had a hard time preparing for the event, but we felt very rewarded by the happy smiles of the children and parents.
Q.What do you want to say to Korean parents?
Melissa Tada: I am from Hawaii, so I knew a lot of Korean families when I lived there. Unlike American families, Korean parents are busy working and children are busy with their own private study lessons.
I think the beginning and end of a happy family is how much time family members spend together. If parents read books, cook, take a walk, and talk a lot with their children every day, their children will grow up as they wish.
